Curricular OfferingsOffering high school courses focused on teaching and education, as part of the school curriculum is a widely used approach for recruiting students. Course topics range from the application of educational theories in general courses to methods of teaching. Two aspects of curricular offerings should not be overlooked. First, successful programs allowed students time to conduct research, form their own opinions and then discuss those opinions. Second, initial data suggests that programs having the most impact provide hands on teaching experiences for their students.
Resources
The South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment (SCCTR) is a good resource for programs wanting to develop curricular offerings within their high school programs. SCCTR is a teacher recruitment program established by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and funded by the South Carolina General Assembly. SCCTR's recruitment agenda is comprehensive. The Center pursues a variety of programs for increasing the number of students in the education pipeline along with recruiting and retaining certified teachers. The SCCTR's primary target groups are middle and high school students, college students and adults. The Center works cooperatively with other organizations to promote the teaching profession. SCCTR includes a Teacher Cadet Program. This program is an excellent example of offering course work in education at the High School level. It also serves as a resource for teachers wanting to create or expand curricular offerings. The program offers a Curriculum as well as training and support for teachers from other states wanting to implement the curriculum. Information about opportunities can be found at the program's website: http://www.scctr.org/teachercadet.asp. |
